Change is Good

When you go into your kitchen, what’s in the cabinet under the sink? Dish detergent? Cleansers? What’s in your pantry? Cans of soup? Some baking supplies?

For many of us, the brands that we choose at the grocery are what our mothers bought when we were kids. We have a tendency to stick to the same bars of soap, same toothpaste, and same brands of breakfast cereal.

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, and besides…we don’t like change.

Think for a moment about your first car…

1969 Chevrolet Impala. Three-speed on the column, AM radio, hand-cranked windows, and a bench seat in front that was 12 feet across.

Our new car has a six-speed automatic, AM/FM/CD with Bluetooth connectivity, and a double-click of the key fob will automatically open all four windows. It has a back-up camera for reverse, and a sensor to open the rear hatch if our hands are full.

Still driving your Impala? Probably not, as automotive technology has changed and that change was good.

Why, then, is your campus relying on technology developed as long as 20 years ago? Why are you so resistant to change for your campus technology needs?

Is it the anticipated cost? Atrium provides a scalable solution that will provide a cost-effective platform to fit your campus. Being cloud-based eliminates the need for you to host expensive servers on your campus, and frees you from mandated upgrades and maintenance. The hardware that you choose is not proprietary. Pick what works best for you, and fits your budget, and we’ll make it work. George Mason University found that these advantages – a few among many – would save them over $1 million over the first five years of the life of their new Atrium system.

Are you concerned about the time and effort involved in revolutionizing your campus card system? That’s what we’re here for. Atrium is a turn-key solution. We work with administrators to determine their needs, and then we do the heavy lifting. You’re delivered a fully functional product.

When your current provider insists on upgrades to software or hardware, do they mandate taking your campus offline? Is that making you nervous about making a switch? Being cloud-based allows us to create your system in parallel with your current environment, and Atrium can be staged to allow for a hot cutover that takes a matter of a few hours – not days on end.

You’re no doubt used to knowing where to look to gather the information that you need and perform the functions required of your office. Learning a new card administration system can be like learning a new language. We designed Atrium to be user-friendly, and based our interface on the input of administrators across the country. Our user interface is designed to Apple and Google usability standards, and you should feel at home with a single day of training. Much like a new Apple device or the intuitive Google Search, it just works. We also provide customer support in real-time. Just call us.

What about the money you’ve invested in your current systems and hardware? Face it, your current system doesn’t really want to talk to everything on your campus. That’s where being system agnostic comes in handy. Atrium is non-proprietary, and is anxious to connect to everything that you want to use. If you like a card reader better than what you have, pick it up. We can teach it to talk to Atrium. Pick what works best for you, and let us make the connections.

Still scared? Over the next few posts, we’ll go into more detail about each of your misgivings, and help to clarify why switching to Atrium is not only easy, but makes good fiscal sense. Put the Impala in the garage, and step into the future.

JSA Technologies is pleased to announce the expansion of its partnership with New York University (NYU). JSA StudentLink will power NYU's next generation, global meal plan portal. The Meal Plan Portal is an optional module of JSA's StudentLink and will go live summer, 2017.

New York University is a private nonprofit research university based in New York City. Founded in 1831, NYU is considered one of the world's most influential research universities. Among its faculty and alumni are 37 Nobel Laureates, over 30 Pulitzer Prize winners, over 30 Academy Award winners, and hundreds of members of the National Academies of Sciences.

Over 70,000 NYU students and employees around the world will use the StudentLink Meal Plan Portal solution to manage their meal plan assignments through their mobile devices.  NYU expects this solution to enrich the cardholder experience, enhance administrative efficiency, and reduce costs.  A configurable rules engine allows NYU Dining to automatically enforce their business rules regarding meal plan eligibility, pricing and changes. Meal plan is automated through live data connections with NYU's student information and human resource systems.

Tammy Johnson, President of JSA Technologies, said of the partnership, “We are excited to expand our partnership with NYU on this next generation global Meal Plan Portal project. We especially value working with the NYU team who are so skilled and motivated to make this project a success."

Tammy continues, "Managing meal plan assignments has evolved into a complex process for many schools. While some institutions have attempted to automate the process, for most it remains a largely manual endeavor. We have been providing meal plan management solutions for years. Working with NYU is allowing us to significantly advance our offering."

Chris Tang, NYU Associate Vice President, said of the partnership, "For many years JSA has been a reliable service provider who understands our business needs.   We are pleased to enter into this next phase of our partnership with a JSA team fully committed to enhancing our student experience."

Atrium Powers Iris Scanners at University of Georgia

University of Georgia's next generation Atrium UGACard solution includes twenty (20) new Iris scanners for their dining venues.

While the Iris scanners were provided by an Atrium Partner, an Atrium App runs on Raspberry Pi's and authenticates card holders using a light pole and turnstile to admit or deny entry.

Other institutions have deployed Iris scanners, but they have typically been connected to Point of Sale systems, where transaction response times range from 2-4 seconds.

UGA felt this transaction response time was too slow and would lead to long lines, given their large size.

Atrium came up with an innovative, low cost solution which boasts transactional responsive times of less than a second. In addition to being very fast, the Atrium App supports offline operation.

This solution has both improved dining operations and the student experience.

Tammy Johnson, President & CEO of Atrium, said of this solution, “The Iris Scanner solution we provided to UGA reinforces the power, flexibility and cost-effectiveness of an open, non-proprietary campus card solution.  This same solution is now available to other clients and supports a myriad of use cases, including recreation sports centers and attendance tracking.  In addition to supporting Iris scanners, the Atrium App supports any USB reader including mag stripe, barcode and contactless cards.”

NYU Goes Live with Atrium’s Meal Plan Portal

$

New York University (NYU) has gone live with Atrium's StudentLink Meal Plan Portal. Student focus group and NYU staff feedback has been excellent. Over 11,500 students and employees are using the new portal.

Founded in 1831, New York University is now one of the largest private universities in the United States. From a student body of 158 during NYU's very first semester, enrollment has grown to more than 50,000 students at three degree-granting campuses in New York City, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai, and at study away sites in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America.

NYUManaging the initial assignment, change and cancellation of meal plans and the associating billing is a complex process at universities and colleges. It is especially complex at NYU given their size and global footprint. NYU has over 23 meal plans (plus Dining Dollar add-ons). Meal plan eligibility, pricing, changes, proration, rollovers and exceptions vary across over 16 different participant groups. Billing management requires connectivity with two different systems of record (Peoplesoft and WorkDay).

NYU's key goals for the StudentLink Meal Plan Portal included:

• Improving the student meal plan management experience using an ADA compliant user interface
• Reducing the indirect and direct costs involved in the meal plan management business process

This project was the ultimate partnership with NYU and StudentLink personnel working closely over several months as a single team.
Tammy Johnson, President of Atrium, said of the partnership, “We greatly value our long-term partnership with New York University. When the opportunity arose to work with them to reimagine their meal plan management process we jumped at it. They have a passionate, highly skilled team and we are
very pleased with the results of this project."
